One of the most recognized structures in the world, the Golden Gate Bridge was opened to traffic on May 28, 1937 at twelve noon. It was a public project that was finished ahead of schedule and under budget. The Golden Gate Bridge was officially opened when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signaled the ribbon to be cut by pressing a telegraph in the White House commencing the event.
The Golden Gate Bridge design is based on an Art Deco theme. The two towers of the bridge were designed to be wider at the bottom and tapered at the top. This was done to enhance the size of the towers which reached a height of 500 feet above the roadway. The Golden Gate Bridge spans a distance of 4200 feet, and is 1.7 miles long. For 27 years it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
This view of the bridge is depicted within the first year after its opening, and looks toward the Marin Headlands.
