This painting shows Oakland in 1915 at the intersections of Broadway, San Pablo and 14th streets (now International Drive.)
This intersection is located in the Oakland Civic Center. In the immediate foreground is the Flatiron building. To the extreme left, just out of view is the Oakland City Hall.
What is a fascinating bit of history in this painting can be seen in the utter chaos in the streets. Except for laws against speeding, traffic laws were non-existent. City streets in the U.S. were all unmarked and there were no traffic lights anywhere. U.S. streets went unmarked until 1919 and the first traffic light was not installed until 1926 in Detroit, Michigan.
